The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) is a global leadership organisation dedicated to enhancing the mining and metals industry’s contribution to sustainable development. Established in 2001, ICMM brings together a third of the global mining and metals industry, including 26 mining and metals companies and over 35 national, regional, and commodities associations.
ICMM
Main focus and key goals
ICMM’s primary focus is to promote ethical business practices, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility within the mining and metals sector. The organisation has outlined three strategic pillars to achieve its vision of a safe, just, and sustainable world:
- Performance: Enhancing sustainability performance by supporting members through peer learning, collaboration, and the development of practical tools and guidance.
- Standards: Developing a Consolidated Mining Standard to provide a clear framework for responsible mining practices accessible to all companies.
- Dialogue and engagement: Facilitating open and respectful dialogue among stakeholders to unite around a common vision and actionable goals.
Organisational structure
ICMM operates under a council comprising the CEOs of its member companies, ensuring leadership commitment at the highest level. Various committees, consisting of nominated representatives from member organisations, focus on specific areas such as environmental stewardship, social performance, and governance. This structure enables ICMM to address complex challenges effectively and drive industry-wide improvements.
Commitment to sustainable finance
ICMM acknowledges the critical role of the mining and metals sector in supporting the global transition to a low-carbon economy. In alignment with the Paris Agreement, ICMM members have committed to achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner. This commitment underscores the industry’s responsibility to minimise environmental impacts while supplying essential resources for sustainable technologies.
Resources and tools
ICMM provides a range of resources to support sustainable practices within the industry:
- Guidance documents: ICMM offers guidelines on various topics, including human rights due diligence and mine closure planning, to assist companies in implementing responsible practices.
- Practical tools: The organisation has developed tools such as the “Tool for Acid Rock Drainage and Metal Leaching Prevention and Management,” which helps companies prevent water pollution and reduce long-term remediation costs.
- Research publications: ICMM conducts research on critical issues like social progress in mining-dependent countries and the role of mining in the circular economy, providing valuable insights for stakeholders.
Through these initiatives, ICMM aims to foster a mining and metals industry that operates responsibly, contributes positively to society, and aligns with global sustainability goals.
