Overview and core focus
Opportunity Green, founded in October 2021, is a UK-registered charity (No. 1199413) that applies legal, economic and policy expertise to tackle climate change. It prioritises equity, justice and accountability in its approach, aiming for a 1.5 °C-aligned decarbonisation pathway.
Key goals and approach
The organisation’s primary goals include reducing emissions in hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as aviation, maritime shipping, steel, agriculture and buildings. It works through legal innovation, coalition-building and advocacy to ensure climate justice features significantly in international policy. Notably, Opportunity Green actively elevates climate-vulnerable countries within global climate decision-making forums.
Organisational structure and growth
Starting as a small team, Opportunity Green grew rapidly. By 2023, it expanded from four to thirteen staff; by late 2024, that number had doubled to twenty-four. The team includes specialists in law, economics, policy, human resources and finance.
Research, tools and engagements
Opportunity Green produces legal and policy research on misleading terminology, climate litigation and decarbonisation strategies. Its work includes submissions to entities such as the UN Special Rapporteur and policy institutions like ICAO and IMO, plus briefings on climate litigation trends.
It also actively challenges greenwashing and drives systemic change via strategic legal actions across sectors including shipping, aviation, steel and buildings.
Media and advocacy
The organisation engages with media by offering expert commentary on decarbonisation across sectors such as shipping, aviation, buildings, hydrogen and environmental taxation. It also issues press releases to highlight key legal and policy developments.
Relation to sustainable finance
While not explicitly a sustainable finance institution, Opportunity Green supports the ecosystem by clarifying terminology and reducing legal and reputational risks—thus enhancing transparency and reliability in climate-aligned finance.
Climate change is scary and we don’t gloss over that, but we do highlight all the benefits that come from a decarbonised world.
We believe it’s possible to reduce international emissions in line with a 1.5°C pathway to zero by 2050 and we find bold and impactful solutions to make that goal a reality.
We are a small but mighty team of lawyers, economists and policy experts dedicated to achieving climate justice.
To us, that means the principles of global equity and sustainable development are at the heart of our mission. Our work focuses on equity, justice, and accountability, and ensures no one is left behind on the journey to global decarbonisation.
In many sectors, changes in law and regulation are needed to speed up the pathway to decarbonisation and this is where we focus our efforts. These sectors include but are not limited to, shipping, aviation, buildings, fisheries and energy.
