Overview
Sustainable Business Council (SBC) was established in 1999 (originally as New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development) to unite New Zealand’s leading businesses around sustainable development. It is a membership-based organisation that mobilises over 130 companies across sectors, representing a significant share of national GDP and employment.
SBC aims to foster a sustainable, regenerative economy where business, society and environment thrive together — promoting business growth that respects ecological and social well-being.
Mission and focus areas
SBC’s mission is to mobilise ambitious businesses to build a thriving, sustainable future for all. Its core focus areas include leadership in sustainability; action on climate change and nature; and ensuring people thrive through a just transition.
The organisation supports integration of ESG principles into business strategy: members commit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, implement sustainable procurement, report regularly on environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics, and embed sustainability in governance and operations. Through these efforts, SBC plays a role in advancing sustainable finance and value creation tied to long-term ecological resilience and social responsibility.
Structure and governance
SBC operates as a CEO-led membership organisation, part of the broader BusinessNZ network. Leadership and governance involve an Advisory Board that reviews membership applications and assesses ongoing member performance against sustainability commitments.
The staff team comprises sustainability professionals with experience across private and public sectors, supporting members in embedding ESG practices, reporting and collaboration. SBC also serves as secretariat for the Climate Leaders Coalition (CLC), a CEO-led community driving corporate climate action nationally.
Programs and offerings
SBC offers a range of resources and tools aimed at helping businesses adopt sustainable practices. This includes a “Sustainability Toolkit,” publications such as strategic plans, reports, submissions, case studies, and practical guidance on sustainability implementation.
It convenes collaborations, fosters cross-sector partnerships, and supports member-led projects that deliver climate, nature and social outcomes. Through its advocacy and collective voice, SBC influences policy and promotes mainstreaming of sustainable business within New Zealand.
SBC also facilitates networking among executives and sustainability professionals, enabling companies to exchange best practices, benchmark progress, and build capacity for ESG integration. For a finance professional or sustainability practitioner, SBC can serve as a valuable partner for understanding ESG commitments, accessing tools for sustainable operations, and engaging in collaborative, high-impact sustainability initiatives.
