Overview
IFRS Foundation was established in 2001 as an independent, not-for-profit public interest organisation. It was created to develop a single set of high-quality, globally accepted financial reporting standards to improve transparency and comparability in capital markets. The organisation operates internationally and works closely with regulators, investors and companies across jurisdictions. The Foundation’s overarching philosophy is that consistent, high-quality reporting standards support efficient capital allocation, market confidence and long-term financial stability. Its work is designed to serve the public interest rather than commercial objectives.
Mission and focus areas
IFRS Foundation’s mission is to develop accounting and sustainability disclosure standards that are understandable, enforceable and globally applicable. Its core focus areas are financial reporting and sustainability-related financial disclosures relevant to enterprise value. These areas are addressed through rigorous due process and global stakeholder consultation. In the context of sustainable finance, the Foundation plays a central role by developing IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards. These standards aim to improve the quality and consistency of sustainability-related information used by investors, supporting ESG integration and risk assessment in financial decision-making.
Structure and governance
IFRS Foundation operates under a formal governance framework designed to ensure independence and accountability. Oversight is provided by a group of Trustees responsible for strategy, governance and fundraising. The organisation also maintains transparency through public due process and oversight mechanisms.Standard-setting activities are carried out by two independent boards. The International Accounting Standards Board develops IFRS Accounting Standards, while the International Sustainability Standards Board develops sustainability disclosure standards. Advisory councils and consultative groups support both boards by providing technical and market input.
