Overview
MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative is an academic sustainability centre housed within MIT Sloan School of Management, part of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was established to advance systems change and equip leaders with sustainability knowledge and skills. The initiative aims to integrate sustainability into education, research and practice to address global environmental and social challenges.
Mission and focus areas
The initiative’s mission is to provide high-quality education, apply academic rigour to real-world sustainability problems, and empower leaders to act so that people and nature can thrive long term. Its work spans climate technology, sustainable economics, finance and accounting, and responsible operations and organisations. Through research projects and educational programmes, it contributes to understanding systemic sustainability issues and identifying sustainable finance and ESG-aligned strategies.
Structure and governance
The Sustainability Initiative operates as part of the MIT Sloan School of Management with a defined leadership team that includes a Director, Co-Faculty Director, Senior Associate Director and programme staff. It also has an advisory board that guides strategy, fundraising and execution. Its activities are integrated with MIT Sloan’s academic departments and collaborations with faculty, students, alumni and external partners.
Programs and offerings
The initiative delivers a range of programmes and outputs for students, faculty and practitioners. It curates sustainability courses and supports a Sustainability Certificate for graduate students. It runs internship programmes, including the Sustainability Initiative Internship and Sloan Impact Fund, to embed sustainability in professional experience. Research efforts include projects like the Aggregate Confusion Project, Owning Impact Project and Climate Pathways Project, producing studies and tools on sustainable investing and climate systems. It also hosts events such as the Sustainability Lunch Series and networking activities that connect students and professionals with sustainability careers and insights.
