Overview
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations established in 1966 and headquartered in Vienna. Its core purpose is to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development, particularly in developing and transition economies. The organisation aims to reduce poverty, foster economic growth and support environmental sustainability through industry.
Mission and focus areas
UNIDO’s mission centres on advancing inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID), aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure. It works to create shared prosperity, enhance economic competitiveness, safeguard the environment and strengthen knowledge and institutions.
Its activities include policy advice, technical cooperation, and support for clean energy, sustainable supply chains and industrial innovation. UNIDO also promotes environmentally sound technologies, resource efficiency and compliance with international standards, contributing to ESG integration and sustainable economic systems.
Structure and governance
UNIDO operates through a formal governance framework comprising three main policymaking bodies: the General Conference, the Industrial Development Board and the Programme and Budget Committee. These bodies, made up of member states, determine policies, approve programmes and oversee budgets.
The organisation is led by a Director-General and supported by a Secretariat based in Vienna, alongside a global network of regional, country and liaison offices. This structure enables implementation of programmes across more than 60 countries.
Programs and offerings
UNIDO delivers a range of programmes focused on industrial development, including technical cooperation projects, capacity-building initiatives and advisory services. It produces research, data platforms and policy guidance to support industrial transformation and sustainable practices.
The organisation also facilitates investment and technology transfer through its global network and Investment and Technology Promotion Offices. Its offerings are particularly valuable for governments and practitioners seeking practical tools and frameworks to advance sustainable industry and economic development.
Our mission: Inclusive and sustainable industrial development is a key driver of economic and social progress. UNIDO promotes industries for development worldwide and advances the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, with its mandate particularly reflected in SDG 9 on “industry, innovation and infrastructure”. UNIDO’s work contributes to all of the SDGs, creating livelihoods, improving living standards and securing our common future.
