Overview
Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI) is a South Korean government-funded research institute established in 1986 to support national energy and natural resource policy development. The institute was created under the Korea Energy Economics Institute Act and later reorganised under legislation governing government-funded research organisations.
KEEI’s mission is to contribute to national energy policy formation and improve quality of life through research, analysis and forecasting related to domestic and international energy markets. Its work supports evidence-based policymaking on energy security, market reform, climate change and carbon neutrality.
Mission and focus areas
KEEI focuses on energy economics, energy transition policy and long-term sustainability planning. Its research covers renewable energy, electricity markets, fossil fuels, hydrogen, carbon neutrality, energy efficiency and climate policy. The institute also develops energy statistics, supply and demand forecasts, and policy scenarios for the South Korean government.
The organisation contributes to sustainability and ESG-related policy development through research on low-carbon energy systems, green growth and decarbonisation strategies. KEEI has supported initiatives including Korea’s carbon neutrality scenarios, renewable energy plans and energy security strategies. Its work is relevant to finance professionals monitoring energy transition risks, climate policy and sustainable infrastructure investment trends.
Structure and governance
KEEI operates as a public research institute under South Korea’s government-funded research framework. The organisation is led by a president and includes oversight functions such as an auditor, audit and inspection division, and research advisory committee.
Its structure includes research divisions dedicated to future energy systems, energy markets, climate and environmental policy, and statistical analysis. KEEI also collaborates with government ministries, international research organisations and policy institutions on joint research and advisory activities.
Programs and offerings
KEEI publishes a wide range of research reports, statistical databases, policy briefs and market outlooks related to energy and climate issues. Key resources include Energy Trends Korea, Korea Energy Economic Review, Monthly Energy Statistics and long-term energy forecasts.
The institute also conducts ongoing policy research projects, scenario modelling and international cooperation programmes. Its outputs provide policymakers, researchers and sustainability practitioners with data-driven analysis on energy transition, energy security, electricity markets and decarbonisation pathways.
Mission
KEEI was established to contribute to the establishment of national energy policy and improve the quality of life of the citizens by investigating and analyzing domestic and international environmental changes in the energy market and industry and conducting comprehensive energy policy research.
