OVERVIEW
BankTrack aims to discourage financial investment in harmful business activities. Seeking to ensure the banking industry sector acknowledges human rights and its role in creating just societies and a healthy planet while supporting fellow civil society organisations in their engagement with banks.
This is achieved through:
- Tracking investments into business operations that are deemed to have a negative impact on both people and the planet and making this information accessible to the wider public
- Campaigning through the use of engagement and public pressure. In collaboration with partners, they discourage banks from financing in specific ventures, enterprises and encourage effective sustainability commitments from the banking sector
- Supporting civil support organisations (CSOs) and community organisations in their interactions with banks, ensuring they are provided with the tools to achieve their objectives in bank-focused campaigning. By connecting different campaign groups on a global level, collective efforts are consolidated in bringing about change in the banking sector.
Some of its active campaigns include:
- Banks, climate and energy-demanding banks to play their part in stopping climate change by cutting all ties with the fossil-fuel industry.
- Banks and human rights- pushing for banks to fully meet their responsibilities to respect human rights and human dignity across all their operations.
- Banks, forests and biodiversity- aiming to stop banks from financing companies, projects and business activities that cause a large negative impact on forests.
- Tracking the Equator Principles- the Equator Principles are a risk management framework, created and adopted by financial institutions, for determining, assessing and managing environmental and social risks in financing projects.
Based in The Netherlands BankTrack is affiliated with campaigns such as Fossil Banks No Thanks, StopEACOP, Forests & Finance, Banks & Biodiversity, Drop JBS, Bank of Coal and Don’t Buy into Occupation.
