BlackRock is a global investment manager and technology provider based in New York, USA, with US$7.43 trillion in assets under management and a market capitalisation of US$79.18 billion. BlackRock operates out of 70 offices across 30 countries with around 16,200 employees.
BlackRock’s platform uses alpha-seeking active, index and cash management strategies, enabling the company to tailor investment outcomes and asset allocation solutions. Product offerings include single- and multi-asset portfolios investing in equities, fixed income, alternatives and money market instruments.
Products are offered directly and through intermediaries in a range of vehicles, including open-end and closed-end mutual funds, iShares, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), separate accounts, collective investment funds, and other pooled investment vehicles.
BlackRock also offers technology services including the investment and risk management technology platform, Aladdin, Aladdin Wealth, eFront, Cachematrix and FutureAdvisor. Advisory services are offered to institutional and wealth management clients.
ESG integration is a core part of BlackRock’s investment process. All active funds and advisory strategies are expected to fully integrate ESG, meaning that:
- each strategy has a description of how ESG fits into its investment process,
- portfolio managers are accountable for managing exposure to material ESG risks, and
- investment teams are able to provide evidence of how ESG considerations inform investment decisions in each portfolio.
BlackRock’s clients include:
- tax-exempt institutions, including pension plans, charities, foundations and endowments;
- official institutions, such as central banks, sovereign wealth funds and government entities; and
- taxable institutions, including insurance companies, financial institutions, corporations and retail investors.
CEO, Chairman and co-founder of BlackRock, Laurence Fink has been prominent in drawing attention to sustainability in the financial services industry and the economy. His letters to CEOs have gained significant attention for addressing issues such as climate risk, sustainability, value creation and purpose as a part of company strategy.

BlackRock is a publicly-traded company traded on the New York Stock Exchange. BlackRock’s biggest shareholder is PNC Financial Services Group, and they hold approximately 22% of BlackRock shares. The next nine biggest shareholders hold between 1%-6% of Blackrock shares.
BlackRock’s revenue primarily comes from investment advisory and administration fees. Revenue growth from 2018-2019 was driven by higher base fees, which were due to an increase in assets under management.
