OVERVIEW
Climate Transparency is a global partnership with a shared mission to stimulate a “race to the top” in climate action in G20 countries through enhanced transparency. It was co-founded in 2014 by Peter Eigen, founder of Transparency International, and Alvaro Umaña, former Minister of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica.
Climate Transparency brings experts from research organizations and NGOs across the globe to produce an annual Climate Transparency Report on G20 nations’ climate action. This report uses over 100 indicators in the areas of mitigation, adaptation and finance to analyse the actions of all G20 countries. Policy ratings are given across areas such as power, transport, buildings, agriculture, and land use.
Reports are published on the eve of the annual G20 summit They present annual reviews of progress towards climate related targets, and advocate for ambitious climate action. Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are assessed to determine how clear and transparent a country’s NDCs are in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
Reports include information on all major areas such as emissions mitigation and climate finance and include detailed fact sheets on all G20 countries. The key areas of their policy papers and focus reports include coal phase-out, energy transition, NDC transparency, and transport.
Climate Transparency aims to increase awareness and peer pressure among policy-makers in G20 governments, influencers from civil society, and the financial sector on a national and international level. Activities of Climate Transparency to empower change agents include international and country-specific media work, direct communication with decision makers and G20 engagement groups, as well as workshops in G20 countries.
The Humboldt-Viadrina Governance Platform in collaboration with Climate Analytics is acting as the international secretariat of Climate Transparency. Their data is drawn from well-established sources, including International Energy Agency (IEA), the Climate Action Tracker, and Enerdata.
