Overview
EuroGeoSurveys was established in 1995 as a not-for-profit association representing national geological surveys across Europe. It acts as a collective voice for public geoscience organisations, supporting evidence-based decision-making at European and national levels. The organisation’s overarching purpose is to provide authoritative geoscientific knowledge that underpins sustainable management of land, water, energy and mineral resources.Operating at the interface of science and policy, EuroGeoSurveys focuses on delivering harmonised geological data and expertise relevant to long-term societal and environmental challenges.
Mission and focus areas
EuroGeoSurveys aims to strengthen Europe’s geoscience knowledge base and ensure public geological data are accessible, interoperable and policy-relevant. Its work supports EU priorities such as climate adaptation, energy transition, critical raw materials security, groundwater protection and geohazard risk management. While not a sustainable finance body, EuroGeoSurveys contributes indirectly to ESG integration and sustainability-driven value creation by supplying reliable physical risk data, resource assessments and environmental baselines. These inputs are relevant for climate risk analysis, natural capital assessment and long-term investment planning.
Structure and governance
The organisation is governed by a Council composed of representatives from member geological surveys. Strategic oversight is provided by an elected Board, including a President, Vice Presidents and Treasurer, supported by an Executive Committee.A permanent Secretariat based in Brussels manages day-to-day operations, EU engagement and project coordination. EuroGeoSurveys also operates expert groups and task forces that bring together specialists from member organisations to address specific technical and policy themes.
Programs and offerings
EuroGeoSurveys produces scientific reports, policy briefings and technical guidance under its own name. A central output is coordination of shared European geoscience infrastructure, including access to harmonised geological, mineral, groundwater and geohazard data. The organisation leads and participates in EU-funded research and innovation projects, contributing datasets and expertise used by policymakers, researchers and industry. These resources are particularly valuable for practitioners requiring credible, public-sector geoscience evidence to inform sustainability, environmental risk and resource-related decision-making.
Mission
Our mission is to enable sustainable and responsible use of the Earth’s subsurface environment and resources.
