OVERVIEW
Headquartered in London, the main business of FTSE Russell is the calculation of financial indices that offer an accurate picture of global markets across asset classes, styles, and strategies.
At the end of 2018, it was estimated that approximately $15 trillion was benchmarked to FTSE Russell indices. Its analytics platform serves approximately 350 institutions globally.
Clients of FTSE Russell include consultants, exchange traded product sponsors, stock exchanges, asset managers and asset owners such as pension funds, endowments and sovereign wealth funds. Their indices may also be used by:
- consultants who advise their clients on investment allocations;
- analysts at investment banks when writing strategies and research notes; and
- academics for research purposes.
Media organisations and government departments may also engage FTSE Russell where they are seeking an index that fits with an item of interest to a journalist or that can be used to assess the impact of government policy.
FTSE Russell partners with other organisations that provide local expertise or specialised input to an index series. They administer more than 236 index families, covering more than 80 countries and all major asset classes.
Responsibility for FTSE Russell lies with its board of directors, which is supported by an Information Services Management Team, and an Oversight Committee.
The Information Services Management Team oversees a further three entities:
- the Information Services Portfolio Board;
- the FTSE Russell Data Steering Committee; and
- the FTSE Russell Governance Board.
FTSE Russell works with institutions around the world to develop indices that meet their sustainability criteria. They also assist with the development of global standards for measuring progress against ESG and sustainable development goals.
