Overview
Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030 is a multi-stakeholder, investor-led initiative established in 2022 with support from institutional investors and partners including the United Nations Environment Programme and Principles for Responsible Investment. It aims to define a vision for a socially and environmentally responsible mining sector and build consensus on the role of finance in achieving it by 2030.
Mission and focus areas
The Commission’s mission is to create a socially and environmentally responsible mining industry that meets societal needs while respecting planetary boundaries, maintaining a clear social licence and contributing positively to communities and the environment. It addresses systemic risks in mining linked to climate change, biodiversity loss, human rights and conflict, and emphasises the role of investors in shaping long-term, sustainable outcomes. Its work aligns directly with sustainable finance and ESG integration by encouraging investor expectations, stewardship and capital allocation that support responsible mining practices.
Structure and governance
Governance involves a diverse Commission comprised of representatives from investors, civil society, industry, academia, trade unions and community groups. The investor Steering Committee oversees work and includes major asset owners and managers. A Technical Advisory Committee provides specialist expertise to support the Commission’s work. The Secretariat is provided by Chronos Sustainability. Chair and leadership roles are publicly named, with regular meetings and cross-stakeholder engagement to drive consensus.
Programs and offerings
The Commission’s outputs include strategic publications such as the Landscape Report, which maps mining sector challenges and investor roles, and a 10-Year Vision and Recommendations with goals for performance standards and sustainable practices by 2035. It also runs consultations, workshops and events to gather stakeholder input and influence practice. Resources are made publicly available through its site, providing practitioners with research, frameworks, and insights relevant to responsible investment and mining sustainability.
Mission
The overarching mission is to develop a consensus about the role finance has in realising a vision of a socially and environmentally responsible mining sector overall by 2030 that:
- Has a clear social license to operate
- Can meet the needs of society in a responsible manner without driving conflict or corruption
- Operates in a way that respects planetary boundaries
- Positively contributes to social development and the environment, today and tomorrow
- The end goal is to deliver a practical implementation plan for investors to see this vision realised by 2030.
