Overview
Alliance pour le GIECO, or Groupe International d’Experts sur les Changements de Comportement (GIECO – International Panel on Behaviour Change), was established following a manifesto signed by over 1,000 scientists from 76 countries. It aims to place human behaviour at the centre of environmental and societal transitions.
Mission and focus areas
GIECO’s mission is to understand behavioural drivers and barriers affecting climate, ecological, and social change. Its interdisciplinary research explores how psychology, sociology, and neuroscience can inform policies and practices for sustainable transformation. The initiative contributes to ESG and sustainable finance by promoting behavioural insight in decision-making.
Structure and governance
GIECO operates as a collaborative alliance of international experts across 70 disciplines. It is coordinated by a scientific committee led by climate sociologist Stéphane La Branche, with Jacques Fradin as president. Its governance fosters transdisciplinary dialogue, uniting researchers, practitioners, and institutions to address the “human factor” in transitions.
Programs and offerings
The organisation publishes thematic reports, notably the GIECO Report, presenting evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and organisations. It also runs conferences, webinars, and podcasts on behavioural change and resilience. Through partnerships with initiatives such as négaWatt and Université du Facteur Humain, GIECO develops tools and frameworks supporting practical, human-centred approaches to sustainability.
What is the IPCC’s mission?
The International Panel of Experts on Behaviour Change has set itself a dual mission to enable the emergence of a more agile, equitable and sustainable world:
Scientific mission:
Integrate all acquired and emerging knowledge, fundamental and applied, on individual, social and organizational behaviors…
Societal mission:
Share key knowledge and drivers of in/action, universal or contextualized, to facilitate the evolution of human behaviors in favor of a more sustainable and equitable future
The purpose of the IPCC is thus to:
- Crossing all the disciplines of behavior,
- Sharing this vast knowledge about “us” (the Human Factor)
- to facilitate changes and changes in behaviour,
- through the deciphering and management of their obstacles and levers, individual, collective and organizational interactions…
- and to bring about a structurally more sustainable society
