OVERVIEW
Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) was created to assist and enhance the economic development opportunities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia. IBA describes itself as deeply invested in the financial success and economic independence of Indigenous Australians.
IBA provides services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People with home ownership through loan assistance and application assessment support; IBA also assists people in starting or further developing their own businesses through Business Finance and partnerships, and helping people make investments with a portfolio that provides responsible financial returns and more for communities and IBA’s partners.
IBA has various objectives with a key aim to provide guidance in enabling Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement in the wider economy. IBA is a strategic partner within the Government’s Indigenous Economic Development Strategy which aims to support economic development in local communities and organically support growing businesses.
IBA is a statutory authority of the Australian Government and is accountable to the Parliament and the Minister for Indigenous Affairs. IBA’s principal legislative basis is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Act 2005 which sets out its purpose, powers, functions, administrative and operational arrangements. The legislation provides two key aims for the organisation: to assist and enhance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-management and economic self-sufficiency; and to advance the commercial and economic interests of these people by accumulating and using a substantial capital asset for the benefit of Indigenous communities. The Board is appointed by and accountable to the Minister for Indigenous Affairs.
