Overview
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is an independent international research institute established in 1972 in Laxenburg, Austria, originally to foster East-West scientific cooperation during the Cold War. It conducts interdisciplinary systems analysis research into complex global challenges that surpass the capacity of individual nations or disciplines.
Mission and focus areas
IIASA’s mission is to provide scientific insight and guidance to policymakers worldwide through applied systems analysis, helping to identify solutions that reduce human footprints and enhance resilience of natural and socioeconomic systems. Its research focuses on issues such as climate change, energy security, sustainable development, population dynamics, biodiversity, and equitable outcomes across societies. The institute’s work aligns with sustainable finance and ESG integration by informing evidence-based policy decisions and modelling interconnected environmental, social and economic impacts.
Structure and governance
IIASA is governed by a Council comprised of representatives from its National and Regional Member Organisations spanning Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Its Charter outlines objectives, membership conditions, Council committees and executive roles. A Science Advice and Review Board and external advisory groups support independent evaluation of research quality and relevance. The institute operates through six integrated research programmes that group specialised research teams.
Programs and offerings
IIASA delivers interdisciplinary research outputs, tools, data models and policy insights to address sustainability challenges. Its research programmes include Advancing Systems Analysis, Biodiversity and Natural Resources, Economic Frontiers, Energy, Climate and Environment, Population and Just Societies, and Strategic Initiatives. It produces peer-reviewed publications, modelling frameworks (e.g. GLOBIOM, GAINS), and contributes to international policy discussions on sustainable development. The institute also offers capacity-building opportunities, summer programmes, postdoctoral fellowships and collaborates with global partners to enhance policy impact.
