Overview
International Panel on Behavior Change (IPBC) was established to advance understanding of human behaviour in response to environmental and societal challenges. Modelled after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), IPBC seeks to integrate scientific knowledge about behavioural dynamics to inform effective responses to global change.
Mission and focus areas
IPBC’s mission is to synthesise interdisciplinary research on behavioural change and non-change across individuals, organisations and societies. Its work supports sustainability transitions by identifying drivers and barriers to behavioural adaptation. This evidence underpins strategies for sustainable development, ESG integration and resilience building across policy and business sectors.
Structure and governance
IPBC operates as an independent association governed by an Administrative Board, an Executive Committee, and several specialised committees including Scientific, Ethics and Media Committees. Its structure also includes three Working Groups focusing on scientific research, economic actors and broader stakeholders, ensuring scientific credibility and cross-sectoral engagement.
Programs and offerings
IPBC produces comprehensive reports that synthesise global evidence on behavioural change related to climate and ecological crises. Its flagship publications, such as the Main Report on Behavioural Change and Non-Change, serve as scientific resources for policymakers and organisations. IPBC also engages through alliances, manifestos and partnerships to promote collaborative action and applied behavioural research for sustainable transformation.
A scientific and societal mission
Our planet is undergoing major changes in its environment and climate, directly induced by our development and behavior (anthropocene). To reverse the trend, we also know that informing and raising awareness is not enough.
Like the IPCC for the climate, we must understand and model our human ecosystem in all its complexity, in order to better anticipate (trajectories), orient and coordinate our actions and investments.
To this end, the IPBC has set itself a double mission:
- integrate all the knowledge acquired, fundamental and applied, on individual, social and organizational behavior;
- share and make accessible key knowledge, attitudes and levers for action, universal or contextualizable, as to facilitate the emergence of a more structurally and spontaneously sustainable, desirable and equitable world.
