Overview
International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) is an independent, global science organisation established with its legal domicile in Zürich, Switzerland. It was publicly launched in May 2023 at the Nobel Prize Summit. IPIE’s overall mission is to provide policymakers, industry and civil society with actionable scientific assessments about the health and threats affecting the global information environment. It focuses on growing research on misinformation, disinformation, algorithmic manipulation and related digital challenges.
Mission and focus areas
IPIE’s main goal is to organise, evaluate and elevate scientific research to improve understanding of the global information environment. Its core activities include synthesising evidence from hundreds of researchers to produce scientific assessments on topics such as AI bias, content moderation challenges, and misinformation impacts. While not directly tied to traditional sustainable finance or ESG integration, its work contributes to information integrity and public trust in data, which are increasingly important for sustainability-driven value creation and responsible digital practices.
Structure and governance
The organisation is governed by a Board of Trustees and supported by committees and scientific panels that implement research mandates. Scientific panels bring together experts from diverse disciplines to analyse specific topics within the information environment. IPIE’s leadership includes scholars from leading universities and research institutions, and it operates through a global consortium of affiliated scientists and contributors.
Programs and offerings
IPIE produces multiple types of research outputs, including expert surveys, synthesis reports, summaries for policymakers and technical papers. These publications address issues like trends in information integrity, AI auditing frameworks and climate science misinformation. It also makes submissions to international policy processes, contributing evidence-based perspectives to regulatory debates. Its resources serve policymakers, researchers and civil society actors who need reliable scientific insights into complex digital information challenges.
One mission
To provide the most actionable scientific knowledge about threats to the world’s information environment.
