Overview
New Economics Foundation (NEF) is a UK-based independent think tank established in 1986. It was founded to challenge dominant economic thinking and to develop alternative approaches that prioritise social justice, environmental sustainability and human wellbeing. NEF operates with a mission to reshape economic systems so they work better for people and the planet, rather than focusing solely on growth. The organisation combines economic analysis with policy development and public engagement, positioning itself at the intersection of economics, politics and social outcomes.
Mission and focus areas
NEF’s work centres on transforming economic structures to address inequality, climate change and ecological limits. Core focus areas include wellbeing economics, climate and environmental sustainability, democratic ownership, public finance, and fair labour markets. While not a finance industry body, NEF contributes to sustainable finance debates by analysing how fiscal policy, investment frameworks and economic incentives can support long-term social and environmental value creation. Its research often informs ESG-related discussions, particularly around just transitions, public investment, and economic resilience.
Structure and governance
NEF operates as a not-for-profit organisation registered in the United Kingdom. It has a formal governance structure led by a board of trustees, with an executive leadership team responsible for strategic direction and operations. The organisation is structured around thematic programmes and research teams, supported by policy analysts, economists and communications staff. NEF also collaborates with civil society organisations, academic institutions and policymakers to extend the reach and impact of its work.
Programs and offerings
NEF produces independent research reports, policy briefings and economic analysis aimed at decision-makers, practitioners and the public. Its outputs are widely cited in policy discussions and contribute to debates on economic reform and sustainability. In addition to research, NEF develops practical frameworks and tools, such as alternative economic indicators and wellbeing-focused models, which are relevant to sustainability practitioners assessing non-financial value. The organisation also engages in public campaigns, events and partnerships that translate economic research into actionable insights for policy and practice.
NEF aims to create a new economy that works for people and within environmental limits. We are guided by three ambitions:
- A Fast and Fair Transition
Build a fast and fair transition to a green economy through a deep and equitable transformation to address the climate crisis.
- Guarantee Economic Security for all
Guarantee economic security for all by rebuilding effective and sustainable public services to give everyone access to life’s essentials.
- Shift Power to People and Communities
Shift power to people and communities through democratic ownership of the economy and devolving political power.
