OVERVIEW
New Philanthropy Capital (NPC) helps charities, funders, philanthropists, and social enterprises achieve the greatest possible impact. Part think tank, part consultancy, and a charity themselves, NPC works to transform the charity sector to do the best it can for the people it supports.
Their team of charity experts provides direct support to individuals and organisations to improve the difference they make. Throughout this process, they uncover issues affecting these organisations—issues that come from within the charity sector itself and those that stem from the wider operating environment. They then seek solutions through research and commentary, collaboration, and policy change.
NPC places their theory of change at the heart of their approach as it helps clarify the changes they want to achieve and how they intend to make them happen. It also identifies outcomes to measure their progress against and ensures their activities contribute towards achieving their desired impact. Their ‘Theory of change in ten steps’ guide is based on everything they have learnt from helping charities develop their strategies and plans. It provides a practical working guide for charities and funders to help them think through their work and provide the best services possible.
NPC believe for the charity sector to transform and be as effective as it can, new thinking must be inspired and impact prioritised. Thus, NPC has helped persuade the charity sector to embrace impact as a key measure of success. They have worked across the sector to advocate for the importance of understanding impact, and to embed impact research, measurement, evaluation and learning into practice.
NPC help ensure impact investing creates real social impact. They work with investors throughout the investment process, from setting strategy to reporting on the impact of investments. They offer impact measurement frameworks for investors and investees, impact due diligence of potential deals, impact reports of a portfolio of investments, impact audits to verify alignment with IFC operating principles, and evaluation and learning through ongoing assessment of programmes and funds.
NPC was incorporated on 2 July 2001 and registered as a charity on 27 March 2002. Dan Corry became Chief Executive in 2011 and is head of around 40 staff with offices based in London.
MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to transform the social sector. We work at the individual organisation level, the sector level, and the wider policy and infrastructure level to ensure that the efforts of social purpose organisations—funders, charities, social enterprises, and beyond—can be maximised for good.
FUNDING SOURCES
The majority of NPC’s funding is generated by their consulting and think tank work and as a registered charity further funding is obtained through grants and donations. Their Supporters’ Circle is a network of respected philanthropists who donate £10,000 or more per year. This core funding enables NPC to carry out their pioneering work. Other notable funders include Oak Foundation and Tuixen Foundation.
