Plastic Disclosure Project (PDP) is an initiative of the Ocean Recovery Alliance, and modelled after carbon and water reporting programs. It exists so companies and institutions can measure their plastic baselines, which contributes to a circular economy environment. PDP is well-suited for engaged management and strategy decisions in helping to create commitments and goals for plastic waste reduction. PDP is in partnership with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and their Seacircular Program for South East Asia, to help some of the regional economies reduce and prevent plastic pollution in their countries.
The work of PDP is overseen by a global steering committee, drawn from investors and other stakeholders who support PDP’s mission. The steering committee oversees the development of the project, and provides advice to the management team.
PDP asks businesses to measure, manage, reduce and benefit from plastic waste to create a world where plastic benefits consumers and businesses without negatively impacting the environment. PDP is based on the principle that to effectively manage and improve efficiency in plastic use, reuse and recycling, businesses must first quantify their plastics. Annual disclosure requests are sent to companies that use plastic for goods and/or services on behalf of socially conscious investors and community stakeholders.
PDP aims to connect solution providers with prospective companies to facilitate design and innovation. By measuring the amount of plastic that flows through an organisation, efficiencies can be gained in cost reduction, wastage reduction, new design, new materials, and better recycling. While designed for large corporates, institutions such as hospitals, universities, government offices and sports associations or teams can also participate to calculate and report their own ‘plastic footprint’ on an annual basis.
The main objectives of Plastic Disclosure Project are to reduce plastic waste in the environment, encourage sustainable business practices vis-à-vis plastic, and inspire improved design and innovative solutions.
To support annual disclosure of plastic footprints/ management strategies, to encourage efficiencies in plastic use, reuse and recycling, and to broaden awareness of plastic investment risks and opportunities.
Plastic Disclosure Project is funded by supporters of the program including but not limited to United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), Forum for Sustainable Enterprises (FSE), Dalen Strategies, Environmental Investment Services Asia Limited (EISAL), and other interested organisations such as consultants, asset managers and foundations.
