OVERVIEW
Since 1985, Rainforest Action Network (RAN) has advocated for natural ecosystems and the organisms that play a role within them. This is achieved through educational programs, grassroots organising and non-violent direct action. This work extends to the human rights of those living in and around rainforests. Since its conception, RAN has been a key part in supporting global conservation movements through their work with activists in rainforest countries as well as environmental and human rights groups, as well as the organisation of community action groups and consumers throughout the US.
RAN’s operations address three main issues: forests, climate and human rights. RAN has campaigned against deforestation through:
- Supporting the land rights of Indigenous and local communities
- Persuading brands to use sustainably-sourced materials in their supply chains
- Putting pressure on banks and financiers to stop funding deforestation
In February 2020 after 6 years of campaigning, PepsiCo announced a policy ensuring that the palm oil in its supply chain will not be generated through deforestation, peatland destruction or human and labour rights abuses.
RAN’s commitment to climate action involves a multifaceted approach; along with campaigning against deforestation, attention is put on financial institutions funding the climate crisis. RAN’s research found that 35 banks have spent US$2.7 trillion on fossil fuels since the Paris Agreement. RAN’s efforts include:
- Motivating insurance companies to stop servicing fossil fuel projects and champion sustainable alternatives
- Supporting Indigenous and front-line activists in stopping new fossil fuel infrastructure projects from commencing
Environmental justice is integral in ensuring equality, equity, and respect for basic rights are guaranteed for all human beings and protected from future exploitation.
- Since 1993, the Community Action Grants program has distributed upwards of $US5 million to more than 400 frontline communities and organisations
- RAN has worked to protect labour rights and ensure safe working conditions
