OVERVIEW
The Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) is a leading organisation focused on promoting responsible sourcing of minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas. Founded by members of the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) and the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), RMI aims to support companies in establishing responsible mineral supply chains. This is particularly relevant for industries that depend on minerals such as tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold, commonly referred to as 3TG.
RMI’s key goals include enhancing supply chain transparency, mitigating risks associated with conflict minerals, and promoting ethical sourcing practices. The organisation provides a variety of resources and tools designed to help companies meet these objectives. Among these tools is the Conflict Minerals Reporting Template (CMRT), a standardised reporting tool that aids companies in disclosing information related to their mineral supply chains. Additionally, RMI offers access to the Risk Readiness Assessment (RRA), which helps companies evaluate and manage risks in their supply chains.
The structure of RMI includes a membership base that spans a wide range of industries, from electronics and automotive to jewellery and finance. Members benefit from access to RMI’s extensive database of validated smelters and refiners, which play a crucial role in ensuring the traceability of minerals. RMI also engages in collaborative efforts, working closely with governments, civil society, and other stakeholders to drive global standards and practices in responsible mineral sourcing.
In relation to sustainable finance, RMI’s work is significant for investors and financial institutions focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. By facilitating responsible sourcing practices, RMI contributes to reducing the risks associated with conflict minerals in investment portfolios. This is particularly important for sustainable finance, where transparency and ethical practices are key considerations.
MISSION STATEMENT
The RMI works globally to enable business and stakeholders in mineral supply chains to work collaboratively on the definition and adoption of policies, practices, data and tools that foster responsible mineral sourcing and production, to achieve sustainable and resilient minerals supply chains.
