Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) is a global, independent, non‑partisan non‑profit founded in 1982. Its core mission is transforming global energy systems through market‑driven solutions that ensure a clean, resilient, zero‑carbon future accessible to all. RMI operates in over 60 countries and employs hundreds of staff, working across sectors and regions to scale clean energy adoption.
RMI applies rigorous research and analysis to drive systemic change. Its structure includes regional programmes—such as those focused on the US, India, China and Global South—and thematic clusters addressing carbon‑free electricity, buildings, transport, climate‑aligned industry, breakthrough technologies, urban transformation, and climate intelligence.
Sustainable finance is integral to RMI’s work. A key initiative is the Centre for Climate‑Aligned Finance, launched in 2020 in partnership with major banks—including Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase—to develop practical tools, metrics and frameworks that help financial institutions align lending and investment with Paris‑Agreement targets. The Centre aims to shift capital flows toward decarbonisation of carbon‑intensive sectors using data, policy engagement and collaborative partnerships.
Beyond sustainable finance, RMI offers a range of practical tools and outputs. It publishes timely research and insight—such as reports on fleet electrification and energy efficiency—and produces tools, applications, “Spark Charts” and data resources to support decision‑makers and support clean energy investments.
RMI also maintains strong links with government and philanthropic funders. Since its founding, it has conducted independent, data-based analysis for government bodies, including national security assessments in the early 1980s, and continues to receive grants and financial support while maintaining sound fiscal management.
Our Mission: To transform the global energy system to secure a clean, prosperous, zero-carbon future for all.
