Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, is at the forefront of driving sustainable societal change. Established by the Finnish Parliament in 1967, its core focus is on fostering innovation and sustainable development. Sitra envisions a future where Finland leads in creating solutions for global challenges, with sustainability at its core.
Sitra’s key goals revolve around catalysing systemic change towards a sustainable and equitable society. Sitra aims to be a catalyst for transforming Finland into a model of sustainability, with a ripple effect globally.
Sitra operates as an independent public fund governed by the Finnish Parliament. It collaborates with diverse stakeholders, including government bodies, businesses, NGOs, and research institutions. Sitra’s structure enables it to play a strategic role in shaping Finland’s innovation landscape and driving sustainability agendas across sectors.
While not exclusively a financial institution, Sitra plays a crucial role in influencing sustainable finance practices. The organization supports initiatives and innovations that align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. By fostering sustainability-oriented projects, Sitra indirectly contributes to shaping financial practices that prioritize long-term societal and environmental well-being.

In conclusion, Sitra stands as a driving force in Finland’s pursuit of sustainability and innovation. Through its research, collaborations, and support for transformative projects, Sitra actively contributes to shaping a more sustainable future, both nationally and globally.
FUNDING SOURCES
Sitra’s investment assets are mainly invested in funds. Sitra makes the decisions on the allocations, but the funds decide on the individual investment targets independently, as per the fund’s rules.
No new corporate investments have been made since 2014. At the end of 2022 Sitra’s investment portfolio still included six companies. Sitra’s investments are mainly made through funds. Therefore, we require that our asset managers actively monitor companies’ ESG issues as part of their investment activities. The minimum requirement for fund investments is that the asset manager has signed the PRI or has a responsible investment policy.
