Overview
Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) was established in 1966 by decision of the Swedish Parliament as an independent international institute dedicated to research on peace and security. It is based in Stockholm, Sweden, and conducts research on conflict, armaments, arms control and disarmament. SIPRI provides open-source data, analysis and policy recommendations to policymakers, researchers, media and the public.
Mission and focus areas
SIPRI’s mission is to deepen understanding of global insecurity and support efforts to prevent or resolve conflict and sustain peace. The institute undertakes research and activities on security, conflict and peace; delivers policy analysis and recommendations; facilitates dialogue and capacity building; and promotes transparency and accountability. Research focuses on armament and disarmament, conflict, peace and security, and peace and development. SIPRI’s work includes monitoring military expenditure, arms transfers, emerging military technologies, weapons of mass destruction and regional security dynamics. While SIPRI is not directly a sustainable finance or ESG institution, its data and analysis on military expenditure, arms industry trends and conflict risks can inform risk assessment, geopolitical analysis and responsible investment strategies for sustainability-focused professionals.
Structure and governance
SIPRI operates under a governance framework with a Governing Board, Director, Deputy Director, and international research and support staff. The Governing Board sets strategic direction and oversight, while the Director leads the institute’s work programme. SIPRI maintains partnerships with research institutions, multilateral organisations and diplomatic missions worldwide.
Programs and offerings
SIPRI offers authoritative resources including the annual SIPRI Yearbook, research reports, policy briefs, databases and fact sheets. It maintains comprehensive databases on military expenditure, arms transfers and arms-producing industries. SIPRI also convenes events, seminars and dialogues on global security issues. Its outputs are widely used by governments, NGOs, academia and media for evidence-based analysis on peace and security.
Vision and mission
SIPRI’s vision is a world in which sources of insecurity are identified and understood, conflicts are prevented or resolved, and peace is sustained.
SIPRI’s mission is to:
- undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace;
- provide policy analysis and recommendations;
- facilitate dialogue and build capacities;
- promote transparency and accountability; and
