Overview
The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities (The Guild) is a network of leading research-intensive universities established in 2016. It brings together 23 universities from 17 European countries with the aim of strengthening the collective voice of academic institutions in Europe. The organisation engages with European policymakers to shape research, innovation and higher education policy, ensuring decisions are informed by excellent research and academic insight.
Mission and focus areas
The Guild’s core mission is to promote the value and impact of research-intensive universities across Europe. Its goals include advocating for evidence-based research and policy, defending academic freedom and research integrity, and enhancing collaboration among members. It works to influence European research and innovation frameworks such as Horizon Europe and contributes to shaping future programmes. Although not directly an ESG or sustainable finance body, The Guild supports research that contributes to societal challenges, including sustainability, innovation and global collaboration, aligning with broader sustainable development objectives.
Structure and governance
The Guild operates as a non-profit network with a central office in Brussels, Belgium. Its governance includes a Secretary-General and a Chair, supported by representatives from member universities. The network organises working groups and committees focused on thematic areas such as research policy, education and innovation. Its proximity to European institutions facilitates engagement with decision-makers and partnerships across public, private and academic sectors.
Programs and offerings
The Guild produces policy position papers, reports and recommendations on European research and higher education priorities. It convenes events, workshops and policy labs to foster dialogue between academic leaders and policymakers. The network also supports initiatives such as the Africa-Europe Research Excellence Clusters (CoREs) which promote equitable research collaboration across continents. Its outputs provide valuable insights for stakeholders involved in research strategy, higher education policy and collaborative innovation across Europe.
