OVERVIEW
Lead by its global commission, the New Climate Economy has disseminated its messages by engaging with heads of governments, finance ministers, business leaders and other key economic decision-makers in over 30 countries around the world. The Commission comprises former heads of government and finance ministers and leaders in the fields of economics and business, and was commissioned by seven countries – Colombia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Norway, South Korea, Sweden and the United Kingdom – as an independent initiative to report to the international community.
The NCE continues to launch country- and sector-specific research:
Sectors –
The Coalition for Urban Transitions helps national decision makers unlock the power of cities for enhanced national economic, social, and environmental performance, including reducing the risk of climate change. The Food and Land Use Coalition is catalysing a transition to a food and land-use system that advances inclusive economic development, improves human health and well-being, and sustains the environment. NCE is also involved in efforts around the International Financing Agenda to support a step-change in sustainable investment by raising ambition and driving financing at scale. The energy sector agenda is carried forward by the work of the related Energy Transitions Commission.
Countries –
The initiative is working to translate the NCE narrative into practical implementation guidance in specific countries. Current country priorities include Colombia, Ethiopia, and Indonesia.
The NCE project is undertaken by a global partnership of research institutes and a core team led by Programme Director Helen Mountford. They are working with a number of other institutions in various aspects of the research programme, including the World Bank and regional development banks, the International Monetary Fund, International Energy Agency, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, United Nations agencies and a variety of other research institutes around the world.
MISSION STATEMENT
The commission and NCE were set up to help governments, businesses and society make better-informed decisions on how to achieve economic prosperity and development while also addressing climate change.
