OVERVIEW
The central focus of Transparency International Australia (TIA) is to tackle corruption by shining a light (through research) on illegal practices and unfair laws. To achieve this objective, TIA works collaboratively with businesses, government agencies and community groups to close loopholes in corruption. Their strategy focuses on strengthening the integrity of the Australian national parliament and government and working with businesses to take a zero-tolerance approach to corruption. TIA are proponents of a national anti-corruption and integrity agency, as well as greater accountability over political donations, lobbying, and the ‘revolving door’ between political office and company payroll. TIA push for stronger rules to stop money laundering and foreign bribery and better protection for whistle-blowers in the public and private sectors.
TIA’s research extends across four key areas, accountable government, business integrity, accountable infrastructure, and accountable Australian mining. TIA also hosts Transparency International’s (TI) global mining program, bringing together 23 TI offices worldwide. This program highlights the process of awarding mining permits by asking ‘who has the right to mine, and under what conditions?’.
TIA’s advocacy work focuses on issues that cut across borders and tackle these through legislation, enforcement, and justice mechanisms. These approaches include partnering with investigative journalists, working with local communities, and addressing global bodies like the United Nations and the World Bank. In working towards robust global solutions, TIA leverages international norms and institutions. This includes drawing on global legal frameworks, such as the United Nations Convention Against Corruption and the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development Anti-Bribery Convention, as well as inter-governmental organisations. By taking a dual approach and working at national and global levels, TIA seeks to deliver change that directly and positively influences the lives of people everywhere.
