OVERVIEW
As the United Nations lead agency on international development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. UNDP assists countries to develop policies, leadership skills, institutional capacity, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Their work is concentrated in three focus areas; sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience.
UNDP’s work, adapted to a range of country contexts, is framed through three broad development settings:
- Eradication of poverty in all its forms and dimensions
- Accelerating structural transformations for sustainable development
- Building resilience to crisis and shocks
These three development challenges often coexist within the same country, requiring tailored solutions that can adequately address specific deficits and barriers. Underpinning all three development challenges is a set of core development needs, including the need to strengthen gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, and to ensure the protection of human rights.
The UNDP produces human development reports which evaluate human development and acts as an alternative to the gross domestic product (GDP) to understand how countries are developing.
The SDGs, also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The SDGs are designed to end poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls.
