Overview
UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) was established in 1988 as a collaboration between the United Nations Environment Programme and the UK charity WCMC. It serves as a global centre of excellence focused on biodiversity, ecosystems and nature’s role in sustainable development.
Mission and focus areas
UNEP-WCMC aims to support decision-making that integrates biodiversity and ecosystem values into global policy, finance and planning. Its work spans nature conservation, ecosystem restoration, nature-based solutions, and the nature economy. By generating data, insights and policy support, it helps align environmental goals with sustainable finance and ESG strategies.
Structure and governance
UNEP-WCMC operates as a partnership between UNEP and WCMC, combining UN authority with independent scientific expertise. The organisation is overseen by a Board of Trustees and guided by a leadership team that coordinates multidisciplinary work across science, policy and technology. Collaboration with governments, NGOs, academia and private-sector partners is central to its governance model.
Programs and offerings
UNEP-WCMC delivers a range of programmes, tools and data platforms that support biodiversity monitoring and sustainable resource management. Key offerings include global databases such as the World Database on Protected Areas and ecosystem service assessments. The Centre also produces policy reports, analytical tools and digital innovations that inform global conservation action and corporate sustainability.
