The firm has roots dating to 1828, however in 2016 Willis Towers Watson was formed as a merger of equals between London based Willis Group Holdings plc and Arlington, VA based Towers Watson & Co. It is the third-largest insurance broker in the world and they now have 45,000 employees serving more than 140 countries and markets.

This company was originally Towers Watson, the merger with Willis Group was finalised on January 5, 2016. The CEO John Haley joined the company in 1977, under his leadership the company went public in 2000, and completed three historic mergers, in 2005, 2010 and 2016.

Willis Towers Watson bill individuals and businesses for services rendered by the company. Their operating income is segmented into human capital and benefits, corporate risk and broking, investment risk and reinsurance, and benefits delivery and administration.
Willis Towers Watson works with 86% of the Fortune Global 500 and 89% of the Fortune 1000 (US). They advise more than two-thirds of the sponsoring employers and trustees of the top 100 corporate pension schemes in the UK, and are the actuary to more than 300 defined benefit clients in Canada.
