Overview
University of Sydney Business School traces its roots to the Faculty of Economics established in 1920; that faculty originally offered economics degrees as far back as 1914. In 2011 a reorganisation separated economics and social-science disciplines to form a distinct business school under the umbrella of University of Sydney. The school’s stated purpose is to “develop responsible leaders by creating and mobilising impactful management knowledge to build prosperous, sustainable organisations for a healthy, inclusive society.”
Mission and focus areas
USyd Business School aims to deliver education and research that respond to contemporary global challenges, including technological disruption, automation, and energy transition. It is committed to fostering responsible management and sustainability, aligning with global frameworks such as Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). The school undertakes research exploring how businesses can adapt to shifts such as decarbonisation, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable consumption — contributing to broader societal goals like climate action and responsible consumption.
Structure and governance
The Business School operates within the University of Sydney, with leadership provided by a Dean and an Executive Committee, alongside heads of discipline and senior professional staff. Its 2023–2027 Strategy was developed via a co-design process that involved a broad cross-section of academic staff, professional staff, students, alumni, industry and community partners. The strategy aligns with the University’s broader commitments — including its 2032 vision and institutional sustainability agenda — thereby embedding social responsibility, equity and sustainability in its governance framework.
