Overview
KRuHA (Koalisi Rakyat untuk Hak Atas Air), or People’s Coalition for the Right to Water, is an Indonesian civil society coalition established in 2002. It emerged in response to policy reforms promoting water sector privatisation. The organisation advocates for water as a fundamental human right and promotes state responsibility in ensuring equitable access.
Mission and focus areas
KRuHA’s core mission is to advance water justice through human rights-based water governance and community-led management systems. It opposes the privatisation and commercialisation of water resources and supports public control aligned with constitutional principles.
Its focus areas include access to water, water governance, and the relationship between water, communities, and markets. In recent years, KRuHA has expanded its work to climate justice and energy transition, linking water rights with broader environmental and social sustainability challenges.
Structure and governance
KRuHA operates as a coalition of more than 30 Indonesian non-governmental organisations and social movements. Members collaborate on advocacy, research, and campaigns related to water rights and environmental justice.
The organisation functions through a central secretariat in Jakarta, coordinating activities across its network. Its structure emphasises collective action and grassroots engagement, with leadership roles typically focused on coordination, research, and advocacy initiatives.
Programs and offerings
KRuHA delivers a range of outputs including policy advocacy, research publications, and public campaigns. Its work addresses issues such as water privatisation, debt in the water sector, and community rights to natural resources.
The organisation publishes articles, reports, and position papers, and organises forums and events to raise awareness and influence policy. It also supports community-based initiatives and collaborates with broader networks to promote equitable and sustainable water governance in Indonesia.
