Overview
Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is a public university in the United Kingdom with origins dating back to the Cambridge School of Art, established in 1858. The institution became a university in 1992 and adopted the name Anglia Ruskin University in 2005. ARU operates campuses across Cambridge, Chelmsford, Peterborough, Writtle and London.
ARU’s mission centres on transforming lives through education, research and innovation. The university emphasises partnership, employability, community engagement and applied research across areas including business, health, technology and sustainability.
Mission and focus areas
ARU integrates sustainability into teaching, research, campus operations and student life. The university states that sustainability forms part of all courses and supports research into climate change, resource management, resilience and sustainable development through initiatives such as the Global Sustainability Institute.
The university’s sustainability work aligns with broader ESG and sustainable finance themes by examining systemic risks, environmental change, responsible business practices and long-term resilience. Research collaborations with government bodies, businesses and external organisations help connect academic research with practical policy and industry challenges.
ARU has also committed to operational sustainability and net zero targets, including reducing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and embedding sustainability across institutional strategy and infrastructure planning.
Structure and governance
ARU is governed through a university leadership structure headed by a Vice Chancellor and overseen by governing bodies and executive teams. The university includes multiple faculties, schools and specialist research institutes operating across its campuses.
Its sustainability agenda is monitored through governance mechanisms including a Sustainability Strategy Group, which includes student representation and reports to the University Executive Team. Research institutes such as the Global Sustainability Institute contribute specialist expertise and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Programs and offerings
ARU provides undergraduate, postgraduate and professional education programmes across a wide range of disciplines. Sustainability-focused offerings include MSc programmes in sustainability, education for sustainability initiatives and applied research partnerships.
The university produces research, policy analysis and practitioner-focused resources related to climate resilience, systems thinking and sustainable development. Programmes often combine online learning, applied projects and collaboration with organisations such as the Eden Project, helping learners connect sustainability theory with operational and business practice.
