OVERVIEW
Aboriginal Carbon Foundation (AbCF) supports carbon farming projects, led by Indigenous rangers. Carbon farming refers to carbon accounting methodologies that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and capture and hold carbon in vegetation and soils. Carbon farming adheres to the same principles of supply and demand found in all agribusiness, however, the commodity produced is referred to as ‘carbon credits’. The foundation connects Aboriginal communities who supply carbon credits, with organisations seeking to offset their carbon pollution, and provides training for Indigenous rangers. Aboriginal Carbon Foundation aims to achieve outcomes that tackle Indigenous poverty and climate change through a strengths-based approach.
AbCF was established in 2010 as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. The founding Directors were Kumantjayi Tilmouth, David Ross and Allan Cooney. The primarily Aboriginal staff are passionate about working to build viable economies on Aboriginal lands and are supported by a range of associates and project partners, who are equally committed to supporting Indigenous people. Aboriginal people involved in, and effected by, carbon projects in Australia, and other respective countries, must lead the process of development and prioritisation of project outcomes. Therefore, AbcF has a national presence with offices in Alice Springs, Cairns, Cooktown and Sydney, to build strong relationships with Aboriginal communities impacted by carbon projects.
The AbCF team is mobile and regularly travels to regional and remote communities, as well as across domestic and international areas and destinations. AbCF’s is partnered with the Commonwealth Bank, who are directly supporting the Kowanyama Carbon Project in Queensland. AbCF seeks to collaborate with fellow Aboriginal organisations, carbon companies, non-government organisations (NGOs), conservation organisations, universities and government agencies. The foundation is a full member of the Carbon Market Institute and is a trusted leader on Aboriginal carbon.
