OVERVIEW
Bloomberg L.P. was founded by Michael Bloomberg in 1981, with the help of Thomas Secunda, Duncan MacMillan, Charles Zegar, and in 1984, an ownership investment by Merrill Lynch.
Prior to founding Bloomberg L.P., Michael Bloomberg had attained partner status at Salomon Brothers investment Bank. He was left without a job when Salomon was acquired by another organisation, and received a $10 million buyout. He used this payment to develop and eventually build his own computerised system that provided financial calculation, real-time market data and other analytics to Wall Street firms.
The Market Master terminal, later referred to as the Bloomberg Terminal (its current core revenue-generating product), was released to the market in December 1982. The subsequent success of the company stems from this original idea, and is a microcosm of the position it holds in the business landscape today.
Bloomberg L.P. provides analytics and equity trading platforms, data services, news, and other financial software tools and applications to financial companies and organisations through the Bloomberg Terminal. Other services include a wire service (Bloomberg News), a global television network (Bloomberg Television), radio stations (Bloomberg Radio), websites, subscription-only newsletters, and magazines.
Bloomberg L.P also possesses a range of industry products that provide guidance, suggest areas of business growth, and assist businesses with compliance through:
