OVERVIEW
The Center for Humans and Nature was founded by the late Strachan Donnelly in 2003. He formed the organisation to explore the relationships between humans and nature in order to meet socio-ecological challenges. Strachan’s belief was that a diverse set of thinkers from various fields would lead to big ideas.
The Center’s values include:
- environmental sustainability
- appreciation of the diversity and beauty in nature
- justice and equity in the economy and relationships
- the needs of future generations of all species
- creativite approaches in wildlife conservation and restoration
- multidisciplinary and multicultural perspectives of the world
- the interconnectedness of humans and nature
Its main focuses lie in endangered species conservation, equal distribution of wealth, and understanding the ecological constraints upon modern civilisation. The organisation is committed to ideas and ideals, and the belief that they should have a platform through which they can be shared.
The Center accepts public submissions to its three publications; Minding Nature, Questions for a Resilient Future, and City Creatures Blog. These publications are free, and contain stories, questions and visions for a more connected world between humans and nature.
In terms of sustainable finance, the Center for Humans and Nature believes:
- ‘business as usual’ is not inevitable, and positive change can be made
- there is an urgent need for change
- the most fundamental economic losses are the loss of biological diversity and ecological components
- all people, generations, species, and ecological systems are deserving of rights
- the ideology of economic growth fails to recognise ecological constraints
The staff at the Center for Human Nature include the center team, contributors, and a board of directors.
