OVERVIEW
Overview
Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union (EU) and a Directorate-General of the European Commission. Its origins date to 1952, when a statistical service was established within the European Coal and Steel Community. The name Eurostat was adopted in 1972.
Eurostat provides independent, reliable and comparable European statistics to support public policy, research and decision-making across countries and regions.
Mission and focus areas
Eurostat’s mission is to develop, produce, disseminate and coordinate high-quality European statistics using harmonised methodologies. Its work covers economic growth, public finances, inflation, employment, trade, industry, population, health, energy, climate change and environmental sustainability.
Eurostat supports sustainable finance and environmental, social and governance (ESG) analysis through datasets on greenhouse gas emissions, resource efficiency, renewable energy, social conditions and sustainable development. Its indicators help finance professionals assess economic conditions, sustainability trends and country-level risks.
Structure and governance
Eurostat operates within the European Commission and is led by Director-General Mariana Kotzeva. It comprises seven directorates covering resources, statistical standards, macroeconomic statistics, government finance, sectoral and regional statistics, social statistics, and business and trade.
Eurostat coordinates the European Statistical System (ESS), working with national statistical institutes and other authorities across EU and European Free Trade Association countries. The European Statistical System Committee provides strategic guidance, while independent advisory bodies support statistical quality, governance and stakeholder representation.
Programs and offerings
Eurostat provides free access to statistical databases, publications, methodological guidance, interactive dashboards, data visualisations and application programming interfaces (APIs). Its resources include economic indicators, government finance statistics, regional datasets and statistical reports.
Eurostat also publishes annual monitoring reports on progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), supported by a dedicated EU indicator framework.
These resources enable finance professionals and sustainability practitioners to conduct comparative analysis, monitor economic and ESG indicators, assess regional trends and incorporate official European statistics into research, reporting and investment analysis.
