The Grantham Institute on Climate Change and the Environment produces research and training on climate change. Formed in 2008 by the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Institute unites global experts to address environmental challenges.

OVERVIEW
The Grantham Institute is the climate change and environment hub of Imperial College London. It was founded in 2007 with funding from the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment.
The Institute’s purposes are to:
- produce high-quality environmental and climate change research;
- promote informed and environmental decision-making through engagement of key audiences such as businesses, industry and policymakers; and
- educate and train researchers.
It is has developed a high reputation for environmental policy analysis and research, primarily focusing on climate change. Its core research themes are:
- Growth and innovation: potential for sustainable growth such as investment in infrastructure, energy and transport sectors;
- Sustainable development: the challenges of implementing the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the trade-offs and synergies between them;
- Finance and investment: how public and private capital flows can be shifted in a sustainable
direction, what financial instruments may be needed and the barriers to implementation; - Changing behaviour: factors affecting behaviours and attitudes towards new business practices, technologies, and financial, political and environmental risks;
- Governance and legislation: governance models to implement the Paris Agreement and SDGs; and
- Policy design and evaluatation: evaluating performance of policies designed to reduce emissions, protect the environment and ensure climate resilience.
The Institute has contributed to carbon market reform, negotiations, and has built a knowledge resource to assist businesses and governments in their decisions about sustainable development and climate change. It is supported by experts who provide analysis and assessment of research.
