OVERVIEW
Headquartered at the University of Leeds (UOL), the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) is dedicated to producing meaningful research that motivates and informs action among communities, businesses and governments.
SRI is one of six research and innovation institutions at UOL and is divided into the following interdisciplinary research groups:
- Economics and Policy for Sustainability – explores policies and changes needed to achieve a prosperous post-growth economy including strategies to limit resource use, stabilise population, reduce inequality, fix the financial system and create meaningful jobs.
- Environment and Development – covers research across four themes of climate compatible development, agri-food systems, environmental governance and ecosystem services, biodiversity and livelihoods.
- Social and Political Dimensions of Sustainability – analyses the relationship between social processes and environmental issues and addresses issues in climate, energy and environmental justice, climate and sustainability governance and sustainable consumption.
- Business and Organisations for Sustainable Societies – explores the role of businesses and organisations in incorporating sustainability practices within their framework and how policy-making, consumers and other stakeholders can affect these approaches.
- Energy and Climate Change Mitigation – conceptualises the implementation of various energy systems to mitigate climate change by conducting research into energy systems modelling, impact and distribution of energy systems, issues of scale, transitions and development and governance and policy of energy systems.
- Climate Change Adaptation, Vulnerability and Services – focuses on the extensive preparation, possible risks, avoiding damages and possible opportunities that are related to the implementation of climate change prevention methods.
SRI’s research is advanced through projects and research centres such as Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy and UK Energy Research Centre. SRI releases publications in the form of working papers and brief notes, digital news articles and hosts events.
