Overview
McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) was established in 2022 as a global health research institute within McKinsey & Company. It was created to strengthen the evidence base on human health and its links to economic and societal outcomes. MHI’s work is positioned as non-commercial and publicly accessible.
The institute’s overarching philosophy is that improving population health and wellbeing is central to long-term social and economic performance. It seeks to inform decision-making across public policy, healthcare systems and the private sector.
Mission and focus areas
MHI’s mission is to improve the length and quality of life globally by generating data-driven insights on health outcomes. Its research focuses on topics such as population health, mental health, health systems performance, workforce health and productivity, and the economic value of health. While not a sustainable finance organisation, MHI’s work aligns indirectly with ESG and sustainability themes. Its research supports understanding of human capital, health equity, and long-term value creation, which are increasingly relevant for investors, insurers and policymakers assessing social and economic resilience.
Structure and governance
MHI operates as an institute embedded within McKinsey & Company rather than as a legally independent entity. It is led by senior McKinsey partners and subject-matter experts with backgrounds in healthcare, public health and economics. The institute collaborates with external partners, including academic institutions, non-profits and international organisations. Governance is not presented as separate from McKinsey, but leadership and outputs are clearly identified under the MHI name.
Programs and offerings
MHI produces public research reports, articles, data visualisations and interactive tools focused on health outcomes and system performance. These outputs are published under the institute’s own branding and are freely available. The institute also contributes to global health discussions through events, partnerships and participation in international forums. For finance and sustainability practitioners, MHI’s work provides evidence on how health outcomes influence productivity, risk, and long-term economic value.
