OVERVIEW
Founded in 2005, Oil Change International (OCI) is a non-profit organisation based in the United States. Their program areas include:
- Global Policy- pressuring governments to adopt policies to end oil and gas production while ensuring a just transition into renewable energies for fossil-fuel dependent workers and communities. By building from a growing group of first-mover governments, they are pressuring for increasing numbers of national and regional governments to end new licenses and permits for oil and gas production and to develop plans to wind down their existing production over time.
- Public Finance- encouraging the public finance sector to stop investing in fossil fuels and start investing in clean energy projects. Following years of campaign pressure from OCI and others, the World Bank made a meaningful commitment to stop financing upstream oil and gas. OCI works to secure further commitments from governments and public finance institutions to end public finance for fossil fuels.
- Global Industry- OCI works to challenge false narratives surrounding climate change by providing information to the financial sector and decision-makers to support a movement away from fossil fuel finance. This is done by reforming international energy scenarios that currently guide investment decisions towards failure in meeting the Paris Agreement climate goals. Campaigning efforts by OCI and others resulted in the International Energy Agency (IEA) releasing its first fully-fledged energy scenario that limits global warming to 1.5ºC.
OCI’s work has involved fostering local partnerships across Africa, Asia and the US. OCI also contributes to research in collaboration with other major organisations such as Greenpeace, the International Institute for Sustainable Development and the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative.
