OVERVIEW
The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment was established in 2008 to address climate change and environmental sustainability. It seeks to apply impactful research with enterprise to shape business practices, government policy and stakeholder engagement.
The Smith School is also focused on teaching, research and outreach. Its goal is to offer innovative solutions to the challenges facing humanity and the modern firm over the coming decades.
Its academic scope ranges from environmental economics and policy to enterprise management, financial markets and investment. It publishes several hundred interdisciplinary research papers a year.
Its portfolio includes a variety of Executive Education programmes that cater to international participants. It also offers independent research and advice on matters such as environmental strategy, corporate governance, and long-term innovation. It is home to the Oxford Sustainable Finance Programme and the Global Sustainable Finance Advisory Council which produce leading interdisciplinary research on how to align finance with sustainability.
The Smith School is housed in the University of Oxford’s School of Geography and the Environment. The School collaborates with the department’s Environmental Change Institute and its Transport Studies Unit. Its staff also hold cross-appointments at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School, the Oxford Martin School and the Institute of New Economic Thinking.
The Smith School has aimed to play a key role in advising international leaders and policymakers on environmental sustainability. It has also aimed to engage the public with these issues – bringing together a wide variety of stakeholders through forums and outreach initiatives. On top of this, it aims to enhance its research scope and impact, publishing in leading international academic and policy-making journals whilst working with enterprise to address real-life issues through research application.

The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment equips enterprise to achieve net zero emissions and the sustainable development goals, through our world-leading research, teaching and partnerships.
FUNDING SOURCES
The University of Oxford’s income comes from the following main sources:
- the University’s largest single source of UK income (25%) is research funding from bodies such as charities, foundations, research councils, trusts, and industry; Oxford consistently has the highest external research income of any university in the UK
tuition fees (from both undergraduate and postgraduate), and education contracts amount to 16% - 8% comes from government grants through Office for Students and Research England
- other income relates to activity other than teaching and research: educational publishing, the commercialisation of research philanthropic support and investment income from the University’s endowments (51%)
