OVERVIEW
Located in Stockholm, Sweden, Stockholm University is state-governed and Sweden’s fourth-oldest university.
It was founded as a college in 1878 as a radical alternative to the traditional educational establishment. The college then did not offer exams and diplomas, but instead gave open lectures on a wide range of subjects – including mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, cultural history and economics. The tradition of giving open lectures continues today.
Granted university status in 1960, Stockholm University is one of the top 50 universities in Europe and amongst the 200 highest-ranked in the world, according to well-established tables such as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE), QS Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). There are five Nobel Prize winners among its alumni.
Sustainability and the environment are fundamentally important to Stockholm University. In 2019, it was the first Swedish university to sign the UN Agreement on Global Sustainability Goals for Higher Education (Climate Emergency Letter) – committing the university to being carbon neutral by 2040, mobilising more resources towards action-oriented climate research and skills creation, and developing environmental and sustainability courses across disciplinary boundaries.
The university collaborates actively with business, state and civil society to help achieve the global sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the 2015 UN Resolution known as Agenda 2030. The overarching aim of Agenda 2030 is to eradicate extreme poverty, reduce the inequalities and injustices in the world, promote peace and justice, and solve the climate crisis by 2030.
The Sustainability Forum – Hållbarhetsforum – is a recurring event at Stockholm University where people meet to discuss sustainable development. It is a platform where those in the academic, business, political and non-profit sectors can network, exchange experiences and find future possibilities for collaboration.
