Overview
The TPI Global Climate Transition Centre (TPI Centre) is an academic research centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), established in June 2022. It is dedicated to producing independent and forward-looking research and data on the progress of corporate and sovereign entities in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Its research outputs and datasets are publicly accessible, with all data open-source and methodologies published.
Mission and focus areas
The Centre’s mission is to provide independent, authoritative research and data on the climate transition, focusing on assessing progress and alignment with the Paris Agreement. Key areas include climate performance benchmarking of companies and sovereigns, evaluating climate governance and management practices, assessing corporate and sovereign targets, and supporting investors in capital allocation aligned with climate goals. Its methodologies include Carbon Performance, Management Quality, Banks Net Zero Assessment, Sovereign Climate Assessment, and sector-specific transition planning analyses.
Structure and governance
The TPI Centre operates within the LSE’s Global School of Sustainability and serves as the academic research partner of the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI). Governance is ensured by multiple bodies: the Advisory Board oversees strategic direction; the Resource and Development Committee supports financial sustainability; the Technical Advisory Board reviews methodologies; and the Management Committee supervises operations and research.
Programs and offerings
The TPI Centre develops and applies advanced assessment methodologies for corporate, banking, and sovereign climate progress. Annual analyses and public datasets are made available to support stakeholder decisions—especially for investors stewarding the net zero transition. The Centre collaborates broadly with asset owners, asset managers, and data partners, and its research provides the foundation for the FTSE TPI Climate Transition Index Series. It also acts as the academic expert for the ASCOR project, supporting climate risk and opportunity evaluation for sovereigns.
