Overview
Transparency International (TI) is a global non-governmental organisation founded in 1993 and headquartered in Berlin. It operates as an international civil society movement working in more than 100 countries. Its overarching purpose is to combat corruption and promote transparency, accountability and integrity across public and private sectors worldwide.
Mission and focus areas
Transparency International’s mission is to stop corruption and advance transparency, accountability and integrity at all levels of society. Its work focuses on exposing corruption systems, advocating for stronger governance, and holding power to account through research, policy engagement and public campaigns.
The organisation contributes to sustainability and ESG by promoting good governance, ethical business conduct and institutional integrity, which underpin responsible investment and long-term value creation. Its strategy emphasises strengthening institutions, public discourse and leadership to address systemic corruption risks affecting economic and social outcomes.
Structure and governance
Transparency International operates as a decentralised global movement comprising over 100 independent national chapters and an international secretariat in Berlin. Governance is led by a Board of Directors, supported by an International Council, Chair and Vice-Chair, and a Chief Executive Officer overseeing operations.
Its highest decision-making body is the Membership Meeting, where members elect leadership and set strategic priorities. This structure enables coordinated global action while allowing national chapters to address country-specific corruption challenges.
Programs and offerings
Transparency International produces widely used tools and research, including the Corruption Perceptions Index and Global Corruption Barometer, which assess corruption risks and trends globally. These resources support policymakers, investors and practitioners in understanding governance risks and institutional performance.
The organisation also delivers advocacy initiatives, legal support services such as Advocacy and Legal Advice Centres, and global programmes that promote corporate integrity and anti-corruption standards. These outputs provide practical insights and frameworks for addressing corruption within governance, business and financial systems.
Our Mission is to stop corruption and promote transparency, accountability and integrity at all levels and across all sectors of society.
