OVERVIEW
Overview
The Council for Inclusive Capitalism is a global nonprofit organisation and community of action founded in 2020 by Lynn Forester de Rothschild. It convenes the world’s largest asset owners, asset managers, and corporate CEOs — alongside civil society and policymakers — to address capitalism’s most pressing social and environmental challenges. Its Steering Committee members collectively represent $10.5 trillion in assets under management, $2.1 trillion in market capitalisation, more than 200 million workers, and offices across 163 countries and territories.
Mission and focus areas
The Council’s mission is to harness the potential of the private sector to create a more inclusive, sustainable, and trusted economic system. It operates from the premise that capitalism can and must do better — ensuring its economic benefits are more fairly and broadly available to all without overburdening the planet. Key focus areas include stakeholder capitalism, equitable and sustainable growth, workforce development, just energy transition, and inequality and social-related financial disclosures. Member commitments are aligned with the World Economic Forum International Business Council’s pillars for sustainable value creation (People, Planet, Principles of Governance, and Prosperity) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Structure and governance
The Council is led by Founder and CEO Lynn Forester de Rothschild, with a Steering Committee drawn from senior executives across global corporations, pension funds, foundations, and multilateral institutions. It functions simultaneously as a platform for action, a community of learning, and a movement for change. Individual members make specific, measurable commitments to inclusive capitalism practices, which are publicly declared on the Council’s online platform. The organisation is affiliated with the World Economic Forum and was partly inspired by Pope Francis’ public appeal to business leaders to respond concretely to societal and environmental challenges.
Programs and offerings
The Council’s key initiatives include: the Framework for Inclusive Capitalism, guiding companies in aligning strategies with stakeholder value creation; the Framework for a Just Transition, a private sector guide to meeting net-zero goals while improving outcomes for workers, communities, and consumers; the Taskforce on Inequality and Social-related Financial Disclosures (TISFD), focused on developing standards for social and inequality-related financial reporting; the Pension Fund Coalition for Inclusive Capitalism, engaging institutional investors; and the Embankment Project for Inclusive Capitalism (EPIC). The Council also hosts flagship conferences and convenings — including events co-hosted with the World Bank Group — and maintains a community platform where members can share and discover real-world business strategies for inclusive capitalism.

Just Transition Metrics is a benchmark series developed by Shift in collaboration with multiple organisations. It provides a foundational, sector-agnostic set of quantitative metrics designed to assess the 'justness' of companies' climate-related transition plans, covering workforce, communities, and value chain impacts.
