Overview

Power Shift Africa is a Kenya-based climate and energy think tank established in 2018 by climate policy expert Mohamed Adow. The organisation was created to strengthen African perspectives in global climate discussions and to promote climate action that reflects African development priorities.

Its work focuses on advancing equitable climate and energy policies across Africa. Power Shift Africa aims to mobilise climate action, support low-carbon development pathways, and increase the visibility of African voices in international climate negotiations and media discussions.

Mission and focus areas

The organisation concentrates on climate justice, renewable energy, adaptation, resilience, and sustainable development. It advocates for a transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy systems that support economic development and energy access across African countries.

Power Shift Africa contributes to sustainability and ESG-related discussions through policy analysis, advocacy campaigns, and communications work. Its activities include supporting African participation in multilateral climate negotiations, producing research on just transitions and clean energy, and amplifying African policy priorities in international forums such as the UN climate conferences.

The organisation also engages with issues relevant to sustainable finance and climate investment, particularly renewable energy financing, resilience, and climate adaptation. Its work helps policymakers, civil society organisations, and practitioners understand the economic and social implications of climate policy choices in Africa.

Structure and governance

Power Shift Africa operates as an independent African think tank headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. The organisation is led by founder and executive director Mohamed Adow, who has an extensive background in international climate policy and advocacy.

Its structure includes programme, communications, campaigns, finance, and partnerships staff working across climate policy, media engagement, and research activities. The organisation collaborates with African civil society networks, technical experts, and international partners to support coordinated climate advocacy and policy engagement.

Its publications address topics such as renewable energy transitions, climate resilience, adaptation, and just transition pathways for African economies.

The organisation also provides communications support and platforms that increase African representation in climate debates. Through campaigns, stakeholder engagement, and partnerships with civil society organisations, it helps translate technical climate issues into policy and public discussions relevant to governments, investors, and sustainability practitioners.
