OVERVIEW
The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC) was founded to advance human rights in business and to eradicate human rights abuse. The organisation is comprised of eighteen regional researchers who are located around the globe and regularly communicate with businesspeople and government officials. These researchers release briefings and analysis, making recommendations to corporations, governments, regions and sectors. BHRRC has three main goals: to empower advocates, strengthen corporate accountability and to build corporate transparency.
BHRRC has currently made over 4000 approaches to various companies asking them to respond to human rights allegations. By systematically following up on company responses BHRRC has grown its response rate to 75%.
BHRRC tracks the human rights policy and performance of over 9000 corporations in over 185 countries, aiming to make all this information public. There is a search function on the website, providing users with the ability to find companies and view information such as whether they are a member of the UN Global Compact and human rights news stories that relate to the company. The BHRRC website is the only global business and human rights knowledge platform that provides up to date news in a multitude of languages. Their free e-newsletter currently has over 18,000 subscribers.
BHRRC’s approach is based on five main components; focusing on impact, collaboration, independence, being fair and objective as well as drawing attention to under the radar cases. The organisation is made up of thirteen trustees and 58 staff members. They are supported by two offices; New York and London. The board provides oversight and is directed by former businesspeople, human rights, development, environmental advocates and academics.
